In 1950, the fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, became Tibet’s spiritual leader, shortly after China invaded Eastern Tibet and captured Chamdo, the headquarters of the Governor of Eastern Tibet. The Dalai Lama assumed power to help Tibetans resist a Chinese takeover.

In 1959, a huge revolt forced His Holiness to flee the country. He managed an escape to India and to receive protection. He continues to live there and work for world freedom and peace. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his extraordinary lifeworks of compassion and teachings.
Over fifty years after Communist China invaded, its occupation, hostility, and anti-Buddhist reform underlies the recent peaceful protests by Tibetan monks. Their non-violent demonstrations were met with heavy fisted violence from the Chinese.
While climbing into his hot tub, my healthy 87- year-old father-in-law slipped, fell, and broke a rib. He began internal bleeding that the doctors couldn’t stop. In two weeks, Gene was gone.

Fortunately, we had taken time a few months earlier to record Gene’s life story, and discovered some amazing facts. He was a semi-pro baseball player, a fine watercolorist, and a US Marine. As a marketing executive for Kaiser and later Del Monte, he worked on national advertising campaigns with mega-stars of his day, including Joan Crawford, Debbie Reynolds, Stan Musial, Lloyd Bridges and others.
We recorded Gene’s life story on two occasions: once at a small family dinner, then during a living-room interview a few months later.

The earliest form of leisure tourism can be traced as far back as the Babylonian and Egyptian empires. A museum of historic antiquities was open to the public in Babylon. The Egyptians held many religious festivals that attracted the devout and many people who thronged to cities to see famous works of arts and buildings.
In India, as elsewhere, kings travelled for empire building. The Brahmins and the common people travelled for religious purposes. Thousands of Brahmins and the common folk thronged Sarnath and Sravasti to be greeted by the inscrutable smile of the Enlightened One- the Buddha.
Asian financial centers like Hong Kong are experiencing an increase in wealthy individuals seeking asset protection. The growth of investment here outpaces the global average for wealth growth.
In 1997 the British returned Hong Kong to China. The city became one of China’s two Special Administrative Regions. Many foreign investors were initially fearful of the impact of the city now being run by a communist power, and some investors pulled their investments out of their local accounts.

However, the governing model adopted by Beijing has proven very successful. The model provides this unique city with a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign relations and defense allowing Hong Kong to use its financial expertise to expand commerce between East and West.
Today international investors and businesses are returning to this city in part because of the Chinese connection. H.K. has become the point of access to Chinese trade for many international businesses without the legal and cultural obstacles of operating a business inside mainland China.
Although Australia encompasses a vast amount of land (7,686,850 sq. km., or 2,967,909 sq. mi.), it only has six States – five of which are on the mainland, and one which is an island. The five mainland States are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. The island State is Tasmania. There are also several islands off the coast of Australia which are dependent upon it. Those are Ashmore, Cartier, Christmas, Cocos (Keeling), Coral Sea, Heard, McDonald, Norfolk, and Macquarie Islands.
Australia is the smallest continent, but the sixth largest country in the world. It’s only slightly smaller that the contiguous 48 United States. The terrain is predominantly low plateaus with deserts, but the country does have several small mountain ranges as well.
