Author by : Gail Leino

Dallas is the proud host of the Lone Star State’s own State Fair. You can find this fair each year during October in Fair Park, a city park that is two miles east of downtown. Visitors to the fair will be happy to know that there is plenty of convenient parking and even valet parking is offered for those who don’t feel like hoofing it in from the parking lot.

Football lovers will also be happy to know that the fairgrounds include the Cotton Bowl and yes, there are football games held during the fair. Those who have tickets to the game can get into the fair for free on the day of, and enjoy both the competition and the fun.

The Chevrolet Main Stage hosts free concerts to visitors at the fair, and usually a few big name stars hang out there. There is standing room only though, so don’t come to the concerts if you can’t stand for long periods of time.

Staying to check out the Starlight Parade is a great way to end your day at the fair. Each night at 7:15 colorful floats, costumed volunteers and life-sized puppets wind their way through the park.

Food lovers will be interested to know that the fair claims the first Corny Dogs were invented in 1942 by concessionaires Carl and Neil Fletcher. You can also get lots of other kinds of Carnival food on the Midway.

Entertainment at the fair comes in the form of Pig Races, a Backyard Circus, and even an Auto Show. The pig races are run three times daily in the Pan American Arena. The Backyard Circus is great fun to watch with the family and you just might be chosen for some audience participation. The Auto Show has been held every year since 1904. This show encompasses two buildings and still requires and outdoor truck area to contain all the vehicles on display.
