Key West Florida

When any tropical town guest stars on a reality TV show, many people start to think that places like Key West are only great for around the clock partying. Although this destination did prove to be a great alcohol adventure for MTV’s The Real World cast, it actually has much more to offer. It is a haven for everyone – even if you are looking for an architectural and historical landmark.

While many people think that Key West is just a party destination, it actually offers a lot of educational activities. The city breathes history, as ghosts are rumored to mingle around the island. Therefore, one of the greatest sight seeing tours to sign up for would be a ghost tour. With entertaining hosts and even scarier stories, guests will cringe at the though of the horrific events that took place within Key West’s walls. Nevertheless, it is a different form of entertainment – one that you can only get in this area.

If you love history, but just are too afraid of ghosts, there are dozens of landmarks that you need to check out. Surprisingly, famous author Earnest Hemingway once lived in stunning Key West. His home is available to see through many tours, and although there is a fee, it is completely worth it. Whether you are a huge Hemingway fan or just plain interested in seeing an old historical house, this tour is great.

While there are ghosts and deceased authors living on the property, Key West also is home to Fort Taylor. This fort was created in the early 1800’s and has since been restored into a beautiful park. With beautiful sunsets and a nice view from the water, visitors can enjoy the walk or simply swim in the water. No matter what your preference is, Fort Taylor will give you a wonderful view.

History may be a prominent influence in Key West and its culture, but there are also modern shops and nightclubs. Many college students and young adults flock to this area, because it is filled with adventure and twenty four hour parties. Bars like Atlantic Shore’s Pool Bar & Grille offers great drinks at an affordable price and many risqué contests. With frozen drinks and music playing all day, this getaway is a wonderful alternative to lounging at the beach. Other great nightspots include Green Parrot Bar. Named one of the top twenty bars in the country, Green Parrot Saloon offers ice cold beer and even cooler drinks. Although this is a great place with a different kind of atmosphere, it is recommended that you get there early. With its fame and popularity, residents and vacationers alike flock to this bar before the sun sets.

For any vacationer, Key West is a breath taking island. It is one of the most popular destinations because it offers an array of activities. Regardless if you are a history buff, a frequent partier, or a beach bum, this is your type of getaway. With an overabundance of sun, drinks, and education, the opportunities are at your fingertips.

Key West is a part of the Lower Keys and is known as the southernmost city in Florida. More commonly known as the Conch Republic, it is a seaport and a favorite tourist destination too. The climatic conditions are mild and resemble the Caribbean islands, making the island an automatic choice for vacations.

There is huge gay and lesbian population, mainly due to the eccentric or easygoing attitude of the people here.

Places You Will Enjoy

The island is a host to beaches, parks, and resorts. The list of attractions runs long. Starting from the Ernest Hemingway museum, there are a lot of places to visit. You can also take the ghost tour. You can hardly miss any place, as the island is a small one.

Coming to the beaches, you can choose a busy one like Smathers beach, which provides water sports and volleyball games facilities. There are beautiful gardens, ball fields and tennis courts.

Fishing and kayaking are good activities for more adventure–loving people. For those who love the arts, there are movie theatres – the Tennessee Williams, which stages live performances of dance, concerts and plays and movies. You can choose trolley or train tours. There are several ancient buildings, which have been renovated and remodeled, like the Mansion Inn, Donkey Milk House Museum, Casa Antigua, Audubon House and Gardens, Robert Frost Cottage, Hemingway House and more.

There are also historical buildings, like the Old City Hall and Wrecker’s Museum, Old Customs House, Shipwreck Historeum and more.

There are a lot of other pastimes too. There is a golf course – a public 200-acre 18-hole course, located amidst beautiful scenery. The Key West Aquarium was built in 1935 and claimed to be the world’s first open-air aquarium.

A trip to the Florida Keys will be complete only if you visit Key West. Even though it is a tiny island, it holds most of the history behind the Keys. Here, the cultural influence of the neighboring areas is clearly seen.

True to its history of being the second oldest city in the Florida Keys, Key West abounds in natural beauty and historical monuments too.
