Fun and Psychology of Gift Baskets

A special occasion gift basket can be a most gracious gift in many ways. The psychological implications are many and interesting. After having read a few books on psychology (not gift baskets), I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable on the subject. Really? Would you like to explore the subject with me? Perhaps we’ll uncover some unknown things about ourselves. Maybe not, but at least we’ll have fun discussing how to make a gift basket.
Get comfortable with yourself and choose a recipient to whom you would like to give a gift basket. Of course, you want to consider the person’s interests first. The recipient can be of either gender because men actually do like receiving gift baskets too!
Often, your first priority would be cost, but that will probably change as you really get into this project. Then again, you may have second thoughts as this is a do it yourself gift project. And buying a giftbasket for a special occasion rather than creating one yourself is all right too and does not mean that you do not care. After all, who earned the money to buy it in the first place? I digress. Back to the project of filling a basket with goodies for someone we really care about.
Start with a theme and try to stick to it. Food, cooking paraphernalia, toiletries, tools, etc. Decide on the size of the basket you are going to use. Yes. money will be part of the equation here as throughout the project, so just make a decision and the buy one that best suits your budget. Consider the shape and color you think the recipient will enjoy as well. When the contents are gone or used, the empty basket may be returned. Naturally, the possibility exists that it may be kept as a reminder of what a beautiful and thoughtful gift you gave. Imagine one day visiting you friend and seeing the basket displayed in a prominent way. Rewards, rewards to your thoughtful psyche.
Food is always a welcome gift and even more so when arranged pleasingly in a basket. Here’s where you can let your imagination run wild. How well do you know the recipient? That will determine your choice of food items. You can gather a variety of foods that they like or you can concentrate on a variety of one item.
Candy is usually a good one to start with and believe me there are as many different candies as there are people. The same with cookies and crackers. Beverages, such as, coffee and tea are always a good choice. With food items, the choices are endless. I imagine the most difficult issue will be limiting the amount of selections to fit in the container that you have chosen. Once again, talking about pocket change.
Another thought is it doesn’t have to be a basket at all. You could use a tin pail, a crate or a well decorated box with rope handles. Open up your mind and think creatively- concentrate on gift baskets.
Now, for the finishing touches. If you have a very large basket or container, you can use colored tissue paper, cloth or whatever suits your fancy. For wrapping the gift basket, there is a saran wrap like plastic that comes in a variety of colors. Typically, it requires a blow wrap gun for heating and molding the plastic wrap much like a hair dryer only it produces more heat. Finish it off with a large colorful bow, holiday decoration or whatever the occasion might call for.
I could go on with an expansive and detailed list of ideas on each segment of the do it yourself gift basket, but I will save those details for another article. Baskets can be used for showers, children, holidays and etc. Let’s stop for now and consider the psychology of the whole project.
Let’s begin with your own personal feelings. Wasn’t that great gathering all the materials for your adventure into how to make a gift basket for a special occasion? Even if you purchased it, you had to spend some time doing it. Though trying at times, I’m sure you enjoyed the final outcome of the project.
The recipient, family member, friend or coworker, will be delighted when they see it and discover that you spent the time and effort putting it together just for them. Perhaps you made a special memory for some one, certainly for yourself. Viva La Gift Basket.
