In the United States, the 4th of July is a federal holiday that celebrates the succession of the colonies from England. The Declaration if Independence was signed into law and became one of the most powerful documents of American history on the 4th of July, 1776. It is often called Independence Day, or the Nation�s birthday, but the most common name of the holiday is the 4th of July.

The 4th of July is the only holiday that specifically celebrates the United States and its history as a whole. The holiday is full of celebrations and displays of patriotism. Most of the celebrations are held outdoors as it is held in the peak of the summer. Picnics, barbeques, family reunions, and other gatherings are often held over the 4th of July weekend.

In the morning, parades are often held. In most communities the parades include marching bands, drill team performances, community leaders, beauty pageant winners, floats displaying patriotic theme and even balloon displays. Children and adults alike line the city streets to watch the parade move through the town. Candy may be tossed at the crowd inciting a scramble of children rushing to get the sweet treats. Later, in the evening, after the sky is dark, displays of fireworks are usually held with large colorful explosions bringing a bright ray of light and hope to the otherwise darkened night skies. In some communities the fireworks are displayed in concert with orchestra or musical productions that showcase patriotic songs.

4th of July celebrations are held almost universally from sea to shining sea across the country. The activities of the celebrations, however, are almost as distinctive and individual as the communities in which hosts them however, For example in the west rodeos and county fairs are commonly held over the 4th of July weekend while in Brooklyn, New York Nathan�s Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual event.
