Are There Lions Around Here? »

Author by : Alice Gully

Getting married was a good excuse to spend a good length of time in Africa again, something I haven’t managed to do since my days guiding riding safaris. Somehow research trips where you rush from lodge to lodge just aren’t the same. For our honeymoon Jim and I paid our own way which allowed us to stay for long enough in each place to really experience Africa as normal travellers.

We started with a day flight to Nairobi, a gentle experience of meals, movies and naps, a great chance to catch up on some much-needed sleep. Our first night was spent at Giraffe Manor. Well out of the city centre in Langata, the hospitality here is in true colonial style, but it is also a sanctuary for orphaned or homebred Rothschild’s giraffe. As most of the residents have been bottle-reared this is a great place to meet Africa’s gawky giants at close range: though of course you have to treat them with respect. They really like cattle nuts and we were soon covered in giraffe slime.

Author by : Andrew Regan

On your next holiday, why not raise a Guinness glass – or two – in the city that’s famous for brewing it; Dublin, one of Europe’s most exciting cultural centres, plays host to countless tourists each year, and with good reason. With everything the city has to offer, from remarkable theatres and intriguing museums to a thrilling night life, what’s not to be drawn to?

Dublin is not just popular with tourists either; in 2006, the World-Wide Quality of Living Survey rated Dublin as the 24th best city to live in. What’s more, it’s particularly popular with young people; while a quarter of the population of Ireland lives in its capital city, an estimated 50% of Dublin’s residents are under the age of 26. That being said, Dublin bustles with diversity, culture and life.

Situated 10 miles north of Bournemouth, this has become one of the most popular parks in the south of England. It is a great place to take children, with a wide range of activities and play equipment to enjoy.

At the heart of the park is the visitor centre, an 18th century timber barn which houses Seasons Restaurant (for freshly cooked breakfasts, light lunches and homemade cakes), The Country Shop (selling a wide range of countryside and natural history related items and gifts), the cycle hire centre, information point, exhibition area and Wardens’ office.

A few minutes walk from here is the Adventure Play Area for older children and a special Castle and Sand Area for toddlers. Next to the Play Area is a large, picturesque lake and grass area suitable for picnics and outdoor games.

Situated a mile south of Swanage, near Poole, this 280 acres of countryside is home to a huge diversity of wildlife including over 500 species of plant, over 250 species of bird and 34 species of butterfly.

A Visitor Centre houses a variety of constantly changing displays besides showing live pictures from the seabird colony on the cliffs and relaying the sounds from an underwater hydrophone. A series of trails has been created to allow visitors to enjoy the area and these are also available in the Visitor Centre.

The Victorian Folly of Durlston Castle was built here in the 1880s by George Burt, nephew of John Mowlem who established the famous construction company, and there are future plans to turn it into a hub for visitors to Durlston and the wider Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Poole and The Surrounding Area »

Author by : Andy Mills

The history of Poole is a long one. The first tourists to visit were nomadic stone-age travellers. They navigated the rivers that flowed through what is now Poole Harbour and Poole Bay and settled on the banks. That was at a time when the land bridge to Europe was still intact and the sea was some distance from Poole, the other side of the chalk hills that used to join the Purbecks with the Isle of Wight, the Old Harry rocks to the Needles.

Since then, Poole has been a popular destination for Romans, Saxons, Danes, Normans, and now, more peaceful invaders from all over the UK and abroad.

Poole is unique in that it has the world’s second largest natural harbour, only Sydney is larger! With a shore-line of about 110 miles, the harbour is enclosed by Studland nature reserve, the picturesque Isle of Purbeck to the south, Wareham to the west, Poole town on its northern shore around and almost completing the circle, the Sandbanks penninsular where the narrow harbour entrance is 400 yards to Studland.
