Mumbai derives its name from Mumbadevi the goddess of the fishermen who were the earliest inhabitants of this place then only a desolate marshy island. Gerald Aungier the President of East India Company to whom this island was leased by the Crown in the 1670s for a measly sum of 10 pounds can be called the father of Modern Mumbai. That’s history in brief, now lets get down to some geography.

The ancient city of Varanasi, located on the river Ganges in northern India, is believed to be one of oldest continually occupied cities in the world. Ancient texts refer to Kashi (the former name of Varanasi) as far back as 3,000 years ago.
When the ancient Egyptians were building the pyramids, when the Middle Eastern cities of Jerusalem, Nineveh, and Babylon were still young, Varanasi was already a metropolis.
India
Varanasi is one of the world’s holy cities. What Jerusalem is for Jews and Christians, what Mecca is for Muslims, Varanasi is for Hindus.
Because of this, every year more than a million Hindu pilgrims, many dressed in regional costumes, flock to Varanasi from all over India.
In Varanasi much modernization is taking place, but visitors can still see much traditional Indian life, clothing, food, street life and customs there that they would never see if they confined their travels to the big cities of India like Delhi or Mumbai.

On first impressions, DELHI, with its jam-packed streets, tower blocks and temples, forts, mosques and colonial mansions, can be both disorienting and fascinating. It certainly takes a while to find your feet, as you attempt to weave a path through buses, trucks, nippy modern cars, mopeds, rickshaws, cows, bullock carts, hand-pulled trolleys and even the occasional elephant being ridden along with the flow of traffic. You’ll find unlikely juxtapositions are everywhere you look: suit-and-tie businessmen rub shoulders with traditionally dressed orthodox Hindus and Muslims; groups of young Levis-clad Delhi-ites pile into burger joints, bars and discos; turbaned snake charmers tease hypnotizing moans out of curved pipes; pundits pontificate while sadhus smoke their chillums; and ragged beggars clutching dusty children plead for a little help towards a meal.
