For many of us, our image of Austria is of stunning mountain ranges, covered in snow. That’s probably the reason that the ski season is the peak time for tourists to visit Austria. But if you want to see a different side of Austria, and avoid the worst of the crowds of tourists, why not visit in summer?
Vienna is certainly a beautiful city, with something to offer almost every traveler. But there’s another area of Austria that is worth visiting in the warmer months – the Salzkammergut, or Lakes District. It’s located east of Salzburg, and is a picturesque region dotted with more than 80 lakes amongst the mountains. If you want to do some hiking, indulge in some water sports or just relax, then this is the place for you to go.

Are you planning a vacation but cringing at the thought of huge hotel bill? Maybe you are bringing the whole extended family with few aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces thrown in. Or maybe you are a group of college friends on a limited budget. If your group is large, the cost of a hotel can make or break your vacation.
So don’t try to cram everyone into a small hotel room to save money. The solution just may be to rent an entire home and everyone share the cost. Yes, this is a very popular way to trim everyone’s vacation budget. Especially if you are going to be staying for an extended period of time, say 2, 3 or even 4 weeks.
Renting a vacation home has many great advantages over a hotel. It’s much more private and your group can use the common rooms of the house to congregate and have fun in a relaxed private manner that is just not possible in a hotel.

If you’ve been doing some research online about luggage, then you probably already know that one of the best, as well as most expensive types of luggage is “leather luggage”.
But is this a good type of luggage to buy? And is it worth the premium cost? Let’s look at the facts.
Firstly, leather luggage tends to be heavy. If you’re going to be carrying this around with you for a long time, this could be a bad feature. But on the other hand, it is often very stylish. Most quality brands of leather luggage have a definite style and elegance to them. If you are a businessperson who regularly travels, you may want to have good-looking luggage to give a better image to the people at work and at meetings and so forth.

I couldn’t believe what confronted me as I crested the rise. Two moose, a mother and her calf, blocked my pathway. Slowly I lowered my pack and attempted to free my camera. But before I could capture them on film, they set off on an ethereal lope into the surrounding pine forest.
Surprising, yes? But that incident was typical of the adventure and super-natural surprises I discovered on my recent 400-mile (643-kilometer) trek along the St. Olav’s Way in Norway.
Stretching from Oslo, Norway’s capital, to Trondheim nearly on its northwestern shore, St. Olav’s Way offers an intriguing way to discover this country of natural superlatives.
Originating back in 1031AD, the trail traces the early Norse pilgrims route as they traveled to Nidaros to pay homage and pray for mira-cles at the grave of King Olav, who is credited with spreading Christianity in the country. For which, he was granted sainthood.

Although they say it’s the journey that matters and not the destination, I, too, had my doubts. I’d backpacked extensively across Europe from Finland to Greece and Ireland to Bulgaria and collected passport stamps at a dizzying rate. That was until I heard about Spain’s Camino de Santiago. And what a difference that trip made.
If your idea of exploring Europe is already met by a “been there, done that” response, think again. There’s a unique option whose concept started long before the advent of EurRail passes and city-a-day college party tours. Try walking all or part of the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain for an intimate, at-your-own-pace exploration of a country steeped in magnificent beauty, art, and history.

Reportedly, there were three roads to Paradise in early Christendom: the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain, the route from Rome to Jerusalem and the Via Francigena (Frankish Route). Originally the Via Francigena (VF) stretched as a series of trails from Canterbury, England to Rome. Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, who returned via the route in 990 AD, first documented it in a diary. However, some say it existed long before as a major cross-continent trail for kings, traders, artists and invading armies. Today, after centuries of neglect, this historic path has re-emerged from the ashes of historic obscurity.
As the first American to complete the 1155-mile backpacking journey from Val d’Aosta, Italy, just south of the Swiss border, to Rome in 2000, and in 2002 from Switzerland to Canterbury, believe me when I say that this is one journey you’ll carry with you for a lifetime. If you’re in fairly good physical condition, with perseverance and a relatively easy pace, you should be able to trek the entire route in 65-80 days. But then again, who’s worried about speed?

When people speak of New York City, of its bright lights, cosmopolitan vibe and constant hustle and buzz, they’re most likely thinking of Manhattan. Not to diminish the importance or the far bigger land space of the other boroughs, but Manhattan is the shining star of the city when it comes to densely packed and eye-popping sights, sounds and attractions. For vacationers anyway, this is where it’s at.
Nothing compares to your first time in Manhattan. Movies, TV shows, famous photographs and glimpses of the New York Times have all probably acquainted you with the general idea of the city, but the gritty, vibrant atmosphere and overwhelming size of it all, from the skyscrapers to the personalities, must be experienced firsthand. Your gaze will fly from the shops to the high-rises and from people’s faces to the brilliant billboards, but at the same time the business-like flow of the foot traffic will keep you moving. The last thing you’ll want to do is stand out like a sore thumb, so don your blackest and most fashionable attire and keep yourself from openly gawking.
