Sweetest Day: A Blend Of Celebration And Philanthrophy

Author by : Ronald Nelson

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged, and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness one has enjoyed. Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious sentiment or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches one’s life and makes it more meaningful. As for many people remembering takes the form of gift-giving, Sweetest Day offers the opportunity to show others that they care, in a tangible way.

Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s orphans and shut-ins too often felt forgotten and neglected, conceived the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this through the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed these small remembrances on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Cleve landers began to participate in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the underprivileged was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small remembrance. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country. Sweetest Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the Midwestern U.S. states of Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Appreciation for the simple things in life and the little surprises that a day can bring may be one of the trends that fuels the celebration of Sweetest Day. It’s sweetness all around with candies and cakes .Sweetest Day has become an occasion akin to Valentines Day when people offer a candy or a small gift as a token of love and admiration. As people become more mobile and jobs take them to different regions, the once-regional celebration of Sweetest Day is spreading throughout the country. Appreciation for the simple things in life and the little surprises that a day can bring may be one of the trends that fuels the fun of Sweetest day.

For many Sweetest Day is just another commercial event aimed at making money, but the fact remains that it is an occasion which has got to be celebrated. It depends on one as to how he wants to celebrate it. The idea is to revert to the philanthropic and humanitarian feeling and to spread hope and happiness by one’s little but sincere gestures of kindness. For example visiting a nearby hospital full of patients who crave for a tender word or two from someone or visiting an orphanage or a childrens’ home, spending some time with the hapless ones and distributing candies and chocolates among the inmates.

Helping someone carry his or her bags to the car, holding the door even if one has to wait an extra minute, giving up one’s seat for an elderly or an infirm person, would imply that one has still done something sweet . After all it’s “Sweetest Day”. Sweetest Day gifts may include chocolates, never ending chocolate boxes that is getting a set of boxes that fit inside of each other, flowers , that speak the language of the heart, chocolate roses and candles.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. We forget that the best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love. Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. A good character is the best tombstone. One’s name should be carved on hearts, not on marble. The nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens, but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls off a string. Whether one is giving, receiving, or just watching from afar, nothing brightens up one’s day like a token of affection, or seeing people treat each other with kindness. Sweetest Day is exactly the time when one can let his sweet self guide all gestures.
