Passport renewal is a service offered by the government of a country for its citizens who need to travel internationally and are not the first-time applicants of a passport. Passport renewal is basically the procedure of renewing or re-issuing a passport in case it has been lost, stolen or damaged. A passport is also renewed if the name of the applicant has changed and his current passport bears his old name.

The steps involved in the process of renewal include submitting a passport renewal application form and important documents like identification, birth certificate, citizenship proof and passport-size photos. Apart from this, the payment is also to be included with the forms submitted. Sometimes certain modifications or amendments have to be made in printed passports, for which submitting a passport renewing application is required.

Normally, the process of passport renewal does not take too long, 6 weeks on average. But in cases of emergency, the process can be sped up, reducing the time taken to one day.

Owing to security issues the method of passport renewal has been made more rigid and complex. This has been done by including digital photographs, biometric technology, and the most recent, e-passport. However, passport renewal is not an expensive service, and provides us with a gateway to the world outside our national borders.

Passport renewal is the process of filling out the proper forms and other communications with the appropriate bureau, so that your passport can once again become legal documentation for moving about the globe as you age. Passport renewal can be processed quickly and easily. In just a couple of days, you can obtain your renewed passport and travel to the foreign country where you wish to visit.

If you have a passport that is not damaged and was secured within the past 15 years, you can have your passport renewed by mail. This is true also if you were at least 16 years old when your old passport was issued and you still have the same name that appears the passport. When renewing your passport by mail, you have to complete the Application for Passport By Mail form and then attach your recent photo, two identical passport photos, a $67 fee and, if you want expedited service, an additional expedite fee. Mail all documents in a padded envelope to the National Passport Center.

Meanwhile, if your passport was stolen, lost, or damaged, or if it has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago, you have to renew your passport in person. You should also apply in person if your previous passport has expired and was issued when you were below 16 years old and if your name has changed since your passport was issued. Just like in renewal by mail, you also have to submit your recent photo and two identical passport photos.
