How to Stay Safe & Secure While on Vacation

With the high pressure and high stress from work or studies, it is smart to reward yourself with a well deserved vacation as you relieve your mind and body from the weight of the stress. But by letting your guard down on your safety and security, and not paying attention to these things could cause your vacation to become a disaster.

Here are some tips to make sure that your vacation is fun, safe, exciting, and secure.

Traveling by Air

An important aspect in vacation trips is the travel that is involved. Before you start on your trip you should adhere to a few simple rules.

1. When using an electronic airline ticket be sure and bring your receipt.

2. Carry at least 2 valid forms of identification other than your passport.

3. Keep an eye on your carry on luggage and never leave your luggage unattended.

4. Do not carry any luggage or packages from strangers.

5. Keep your prescription drugs in your carry on bags. Never place them in luggage that will be checked in.

6. Keep your valuables in your carry on bags. Never place them in luggage that will be checked in.

On the Road Safety

Some travelers prefer to drive to their favorite vacation spots, and along with driving the family on vacation comes another set of safety and security hazards. Precautions must be observed to insure that everyone has a good time.

1. Overloading your vehicle can cause trouble, so be sure you know your vehicle’s weight limit and towing limit. And not to exceed these limits.

2. Always have an emergency kit available. The emergency kit should include: first aid kit, jumper cables, tow rope, flashlight, repair tools, and safety flares. If room permits you should also have drinking water and dried provisions.

3. Be sure all baggage placed on top of the vehicle is secure and protected.

4. Have your vehicle’s fluid levels, tires, wiper blades, and lights checked by a professional mechanic before going on any long trips. Mechanical problems can be avoided if the vehicle is in good running condition.

5. Use extreme caution when thinking about giving strangers a ride.

6. Keep the doors locked and windows up when leaving you vehicle unattended for any length of time.

7. Follow all traffic rules and regulations.

8. Always wear you safety belts.

9. Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Dream Vacation

The actual traveling that gets you to your vacation spot is not the only aspect wherein a problem or obstacle could arise. You can encounter vacation boo-boos as well while relaxing and having fun. So please keep these precautions in mind.

Your “Dream Vacation” would not be complete without the cash to spare on souvenirs, accommodations and having a good time.

There are numerous undesirables that prey on the unsuspecting traveler, they will gladly take what ever they can get.

On Money and Valuables

1. Use credit cards and travelers checks while on vacation, avoid carrying a large amount of cash on your person.

2. Be discreet when paying for large ticket items.

3. Keep your valuables in a secure place. The hotel desk safe and the trunk of your car are advisable locations to keep your valuables.

4. Be alert, observant, and confident. Do not get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On Unfamiliar Places and Strangers

1. Listen to your instincts, they will not fail you.

2. During visits to places that you are not familiar with travel in groups. The larger the better and more secure.

3. Ask your tour guide or the hotel manager what places or safe and which places are dangerous and should be avoided.

4. It is advisable to have a map of the vacation spot and surrounding area’s with you wherever you go.

5. After dark stay in well lit and open areas.

6. Pay attention to you surrounding at all times, and on any suspicious people or places.

7. Avoid places that may be more likely to have fights or any type of volatile scenarios erupt.

Traveling with Children

1. Be sure that your children know the phone number and address of the facility that you are staying in.

2. Never leave small children unattended.

3. Remind you children not to talk to strangers, or accept anything from strangers.

4. Know where the kid friendly zones in the area are.

You’re Health While on Vacation

1. Bring your medications for your allergies and sickness.

2. Bring your contact details of you personal physician and that of your children.

3. Bring your vitamins and minerals.

Secure the House You Will Leave Behind.

1. If possible get a trustworthy house sitter or caretaker to check on your residence during the time that you are absent.

2. Have a home alarm system installed.

3. Make sure that all doors and windows are locked.

4. Stop all news paper and mail delivery while on vacation.

5. Be sure that your loved ones have the necessary contact information in the event that they need to contact you.

Vacations can be truly fun and relaxing, but safety and security for one’s self and family cannot be over looked. Criminals prey on those who are not prepared, or do not take the time or make the effort to protect themselves. Be Safe-Don’t be a Victim.
