History of Palm Desert

Author by : Jason Albright

Palm Desert is located in Riverside County, California and is in the Coachella Valley, along with Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Springs, and Rancho Mirage. The city of Palm Desert is 11 miles east of Palm Springs.

Palm Desert has long been a major center of growth for the Coachella Valley area. The growth continues with the “snowbirds,” residents of colder climates who came to Palm Desert during the winter months. The population of Palm Desert actually increases by an estimated 31,000 in the winter. The past few years has seen a growth of “full-timers” who live in the city year-round.

Palm Desert began as a farm known as Old MacDonald Ranch. By the 1920s, the small settlement became known as Palm Village when date palms were planted to give the area more character. In 1943, the first residential development was built in Palm Desert in connection with an Army maintenance camp. In fact, Palm Desert was once a training ground for General George Patton’s Third Army troops.

The residential portion of Palm Desert was later developed into “El Paseo.” “El Paseo” remains one of Palm Desert’s most attractive shopping districts. Its upscale stores and ritzy atmosphere are heavily influenced by the look and feel of Rodeo Drive. In 1948, the Palm Desert Corporation began to develop real estate in what was then known as Palm Village. It wasn’t until 1951 that Palm Desert earned its new name.

Palm Desert has other exciting features, other than “El Paseo.” The Palm Desert Living Desert Zoo and Gardens are a combination zoo and botanical gardens. It features an incredible collection of desert plants and animals in their natural environment. The College of the Desert is also located there, which is an extension campus of California State University San Bernardino.
