Going Home to the Motherland: Producer Kerry "Krucial" Brothers Talks about His Trek to Africa

Author by : Jenn Clark

Kerry “Krucial” Brothers is doing big things. Not only is he producing his own EP “Take Da Hood Back,” Kerry is also giving back to the global community in a big way.

During his recent travel to Africa, Kerry took a few moments to answer our questions about his charity work in the Motherland, his upcoming EP, and the future of KrucialKeys Productions.

Juicy: I hear you are in Africa…what are you doing over there?

Kerry: I’m on a pilgrimage for Keep A Child Alive, which is a charity for getting anti-retral viral drugs for children with HIV/AIDS in Africa. I went visiting the clinics and orphanages in three countries Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa and five cities…where the drugs that were paid for with donations from everyday people are going to the children. They are benefiting from them.

Juicy: As an African American, what is it like being in Africa?

Kerry: Being in Africa gives you mixed feelings. On one hand it’s great to be where all life started. You definitely feel a connection with your roots and it makes you feel part of a much larger family. You see what a wonderful loving and beautiful people we are. On the other hand, you see how the continent has been raped and is constantly being raped and divided. And how ignorant we really are of each other due to the powers that be and what they allow us to see of each other.

Juicy: Do you feel a connection or do you feel like any other tourist?

Kerry: I definitely feel connected.

Juicy: Tell us about your upcoming album-Take Da Hood Back

Kerry: It’s actually an EP which consists of 8 songs; it’s just a little taster of what’s to come. I have my protégé by the name of Illz featured all over it. We’re getting our Rae and Ghost, or Dre and Snoop on…so to speak. It has a little something for everyone. But best believe you will be getting some quality Hip Hop from people who love it and [who] ain’t afraid to admit it.

Juicy: What’s the first track?

Kerry: Up In Da Kitchen (Kitchen Boyz)

Juicy: Who did you collaborate with?

Kerry: Mainly Illz and the KrucialKeys Fam.

Juicy: What’s your favorite track on the album?

Kerry: Now you know I can’t really answer that. The only thing I can say to elaborate is depending on the mood, I may pick one over the other. When I’m in the Jeep, “They Don’t Understand” may be my fav. When I’m on stage “Take Da Hood Back”. When I get up in the morning “Up In the Kitchen,” “We Coming Thru,” etc.

Juicy: You are known for your R&B joints, especially working with Alicia, but I hear hip-hop is your thing…tell us more about your passion for hip-hop.

Kerry: I am Hip Hop!!

Juicy: What inspires you when you sit down in the studio to create new joints?

Kerry: Depends…sometimes I‘ll have sounds in my head already. Sometimes I search for sounds and end up creating from what sounds I may stumble upon. Sometimes I dig through the crates and come up on a hot loop or snare or hit. Or maybe just the record gets me in a zone and I create fresh off the feeling.

Juicy: Tell us about MC Illz. When is he gracing us with his album?

Kerry: Illz is the truth. He is the first kid I meet who is an old soul in Hip Hop. He knows the history. Sometimes I forget how old he is. At 18, his insight is deeper than cats almost twice his age. He’s the future, trust me. His album will be coming top of next year, maybe even sooner depending on if the world is really ready for a change.

Juicy:: Other than taking over the music biz…what’s next on the horizon for you?

Kerry: More growth, more power, media, merchandise, movies, etc.
