Take some of the emphasis off of gifting this holiday season and increase quality time by planning Christmas games for kids. What children really want for Christmas is to interact with others. Giving them time and attention is the best gift of all. Even if they seem addicted to video games they still want others to just sit with them and enjoy the games. Try to involve them in interactive games which help to improve their social skills. This is especially true when the kids are off from school and have extra time on their hands. It not only keeps them out of trouble but also creates lasting memories of positive holiday experiences.
One good interactive game that will certainly get the kids outside and enjoying the winter weather is their very own Winter Olympics. Start the kids off with a timed race to make as many snowballs as each kid can and the one who makes the most in time gets the gold medal or ornament for that round. Then set up a target. How about setting up a homemade paper bull’s eye? Have the kids get in line with their snowballs and try to hit the center of the target. Those with the most hits in the center can claim to be the winter Olympic winners. And for the last winter activity have them use up the rest of their snowballs in the construction of a snow man.
Afterward there’s plenty of healthy reasons to serve up hot cocoa and Christmas cookies. If there’s a warm hearth then there’s no better way to enjoy the season than to sing or listen to Christmas carols around it. When everyone feels all toasty again then its time for board games or other indoor favorites. One possibility is to declare a “last year’s game night.” This is a good chance to get the previous years’ games out and get a little more mileage out of them before new games and toys arrive. Kids usually find that they had games that were stored away before they were used very much. The older games often have a lot more fun left in them.
