Author by : Bernadette Dimitrov

Christmas folklore tells us of many fun and whacky superstitions that have been handed down through generations. Some of these Christmas superstitions are nothing less than hilarious and have created much family amusement and fun as part of their Christmas celebrations. Here are three classic Christmas superstitions for you to enjoy!

1. To prevent quarrelling on Christmas day family members must place their shoes side by side Christmas Eve. It is considered bad luck to test this Christmas superstition!

2. In some colder climates there is a Christmas superstition that says you have to keep a Yule log burning for the 12 days of Christmas. If you let it go out gnome like mischief makers will come down the chimney and cause all kinds of mayhem like riding on the backs of people, braiding tails of horses and making milk sour! The family work hard to maintain the fire in the main room burning day and night. This is done with much fun and jesting.

3. In some European countries at the end of the Christmas festive meal you must not leave the table until the host gives a signal that the Christmas feast has ended. Then all family and guests rise from the table in unison and leave. This comes from a very old Christmas superstition that says “The first to rise without the hosts blessing will die before the next Christmas Eve!” Since no one wishes to test this superstition all rise and leave on cue with haste and with much joyful laughter!

Whacky Christmas superstitions were once quite common. There is no reason why you couldn’t incorporate some of them into your Christmas festive celebrations and enjoy a little more jesting and fun that the whole family will enjoy!
